Hiring an Untrained Arborist is Dangerous

By: albertaarb - April 26, 2016

Do you have a tree on your property that needs maintenance? It can be tempting to do the work yourself or to hire a high school or university student on break to cut down some of those branches.

That’s not a good idea, though. Hiring an arborist means that you’re choosing a qualified professional to do the work. Read on to learn why selecting someone who isn’t trained in tree care can actually be dangerous.

The Dangers of Untrained “Arborists”

In Canada, the emerald ash borer beetle has damaged countless ash trees. As a result, there’s a huge demand for the removal of these trees. And many untrained, unskilled labourers have cashed in on the phenomenon.

Their desire to make a quick buck doesn’t mean that they know what they’re doing, though. Since 2011, nine people have been killed and 67 have been critically injured in Ontario alone working on trees.

It’s Safer to Hire a Professional Arborist

“Just because some people don’t know what they’re doing doesn’t mean that I should pay more for a trained arborist,” you might say. That thinking can cost you in the long run.

Let’s say you hire someone you found through a flyer on a telephone poll. He’s got a chainsaw and a truck. You might think that’s all he needs. However, if he doesn’t have enough or any insurance and he’s injured while working on your property, you’re liable.

A professional arborist will carry insurance that will cover workers’ compensation, property damage, and personal liability. These will protect you in the event that a worker is injured on your property.

Your Trees Will Thank You

In addition to the issues of safety and insurance, hiring a trained arborist means that he or she has the knowledge and skills necessary to properly tend to your trees.

Arborists go through special training in which they learn how to plant, care for and maintain trees. “How much care do trees really need?” You might ask. Let’s take the example of pruning. “Pruning” refers to trimming back branches so that the tree grows to be healthy and strong. If you don’t prune the right branches, you can damage the tree. Proper pruning is especially important for fruit trees, because the wrong pruning technique means they won’t yield fruit.

You might think you’re saving yourself money by hiring a tree service company that employs untrained labourers. They might use techniques that will severely damage your tree, and it could take years for you to see how badly the tree has been harmed. By that point, it will be far more expensive to attempt to save it.
