The Hidden Costs of Removing Your Own Trees

By: albertaarb - March 16, 2016

You may want to just do it yourself, but removing your own trees can be costly. Cutting down trees, especially if they are large, is a more complex (and more dangerous) process than you may assume. Some of the hidden costs—which can affect more than just your wallet—may surprise you.

The Dangers of Removing Trees Yourself

Arborists are trained to remove trees in a way that preserves the trees' surroundings and maintains the safety of those nearby. Not only can fences, gardens, and other yard features be at risk, but falling tree limbs and flying wood chips pose present very real hazards. A rotten tree will also be harder to work with, as limbs could break unexpectedly. Furthermore, if the tree is near any overhead wires, you could find yourself in trouble.

Equipment Costs

To start with, you'll need a saw, either a hand saw or axe for small trees or a chainsaw for larger ones. With a large tree, you may need to remove larger branches first, which will likely necessitate the use of guide ropes and a ladder. You'll also need safety equipment, such as a hard hat, work gloves, work boots, and eye and ear protection.

The Loss of Time

Unless you are dealing with a very small tree, removing your own tree will likely require you to devote a day or more to the task. Basically, there goes your weekend.

When you consider the financial costs, the safety concerns, and the time that may be required to remove your own trees, getting an arborist to do the job starts to seem pretty worthwhile. The official city website for Edmonton recommends using a certified I.S.A. arborist even for tree trimming.
