What to Do When a Snowstorm Damages a Tree

Snowstorms are a part of Canadian winters. And in Edmonton, they can be part of Canadian springs and autumns, too. Unfortunately, they can also do quite a bit of damage to trees. What can you do if your trees are severely affected by snow? Read on for advice on what (and what not) to do.

Safety First

The most important thing is to stay safe when dealing with a tree damaged by a snowstorm. You don't want to become a victim of a fallen tree or another hazard because you care about Mother Nature.

If you're not at risk from the tree falling on you (or if it isn't caught in power lines), assess the tree for damage. Are there large limbs that are hanging from the tree? Has the trunk split?

Never attempt to climb a damaged tree. Not only could you injure yourself, you could also cause further harm to the tree.

When the Snow Clears

As the weather gets warmer, caring for your damaged tree is more crucial than ever. You'll have to keep two things in mind: fertilizing and pruning.

Fertilizing gives the tree the nutrients it needs to begin to heal. Research which fertilizer will be best for your tree. When it comes to pruning, don't do too much of it. Focus on pruning the branches that are at greatest risk for failure and those which have broken completely. Otherwise, you could make the situation worse.

 Call a Professional

After the massive snowstorm in Calgary in September 2014, municipal officials urged residents to consult with specially trained arborists. Why would they make such an announcement?

Arborists undergo a rigorous educational program that ensures that they know how to care for and properly maintain trees. Their training means that they can safely prune, remove branches, treat diseases and remove trees if absolutely necessary. Their treatment won't cause more damage to the tree, and if the tree is in good enough condition, they can save it and help it flourish.
