It’s Never Too Late For Tree Removal In Edmonton

If you ask Google, the best time of year to remove a tree is winter or at latest early spring. There’s a bit of common-sense behind that. In winter, all trees are dormant and deciduous trees in particular have shed their leaves. This generally means there’s less obstruction that an arborist must deal with in the process of tree removal, which can result in less cost.

Well, spring has already sprung officially, but you’re not out of luck. If you live in Edmonton or surrounding areas and are considering removing a tree, the good news is that spring-like temperatures—and therefore new foliage growth for trees—can be delayed compared to more temperate climates. The longer winter season in the northern parts of Alberta means there’s a bigger window of time for optimal tree removal in Edmonton than in other parts of Canada.

And the fact of the matter is, there’s never a wrong time of year for tree removal if you’re dealing with a tree that’s become a problem—or could turn into problems such as damage to your home or property, or worse, to people. But how do you know if you should call a certified arborist to assess a tree for removal?

Signs that could indicate the need for tree removal: the obvious and not so obvious

  • Dead trees can be identified in various ways. Lack of new growth (shoots, leaves, etc.), the presence of fungus and rot, and peeling bark are just a few signs that could mean that a tree is dead or dying and may need to be removed so it doesn’t become a falling hazard due to increased instability in the root system and trunk.

  • Diseased trees have been infected by a pathogen, much the same as humans can get sick. A diseased tree should be assessed by a certified arborist to determine whether the tree can be treated and healed or if the best course of action is tree removal. Diseased trees left untreated eventually die and become hazards due to risk of branches breaking free and falling.

  • Decayed or damaged trees have had their natural structural integrity weakened by exterior forces or agents (weather/storms, disease, animal/pest infestation, etc.). In a deteriorated state, a tree’s branches become a hazard, at risk of breaking off and falling, causing damage or injury to property or people.

  • Overgrown trees that aren’t well suited to the space they’ve been planted in or haven’t been maintained properly by a professional arborist can pose structural risks to your home, garage or other outbuildings. They can also obstruct windows and encroach upon power or utility lines that connect to your house. There’s even the possibility that trees that haven’t been properly pruned and trimmed will create thick canopies that present the perfect habitat for certain kinds of pests.

There are of course other indicators that point to the need for tree removal that only a trained arborist can identify.

If in doubt, call an expert

Removing a tree is a huge undertaking that should only be done by someone who really knows what they’re doing. Even if the tree, in your mind, seems like something you might be able to deal with, there’s still the issues of accessing the tree (you’re working off the ground at varying heights) and having the proper equipment and operating it safely to avoid injury to yourself, someone else or your property. This is where a certified arborist beats the “do it yourself” approach every time. Certified arborists are experts in tree removal and care, due to hours and hours of learning and application.
