5 Fall Tips to Care for Your Trees

By: Alberta Arborists - September 7, 2016

The temperature is beginning to drop and the air is becoming crisp. That’s right, autumn is here once again. We associate autumn with falling leaves, but just because trees are going bare doesn’t mean they don’t need care during this season. Read on to learn about caring for your trees during the fall.

Don’t Let Your Trees Go Thirsty

Your trees need to drink year round; even though the weather is getting cooler, trees still need water.

Keep watering your trees until all of the leaves have fallen off and the ground is frozen. Your trees will appreciate it in the winter, when the air isn’t very moist.

Mulch Much?

You don’t want all that watering to go to waste. Putting down a layer of mulch in the fall helps your trees retain moisture.

In addition to keeping the water in, mulch helps your trees stay warm. Think of it as a blanket for the tree’s roots.

It’s a Wrap

You put on more layers during the cooler months to keep warm. Trees have extra layers too, but they protect from sunscald, not the cold.

Most trees don’t need to be wrapped, but those with thin bark (such as maples and fruit trees) benefit from wrapping for the first two winters after being planted.

Break Out the Shovel

Just because the leaves are falling doesn’t mean you shouldn’t think about planting. On the contrary, autumn is a great time to plant trees.

Why should you plant in autumn? The weather is cooler, and the tree will have a chance to establish root systems during the winter.

Know the Best Time to Fertilize

Firstly, your trees might not need very much fertilizer. If they do, the best time of the year to apply fertilizer is early spring or fall.

Secondly, test your soil to determine what nutrients it needs. Over-fertilization can damage trees, so you want to do it only when necessary.
