Hedge Trimming Tips From a Pro

By: albertaarb - January 3, 2017

A neat, well-kept hedge is a sight to behold, but it can take quite some finessing to get that crisp, sharp cut. Here are a few tips and tricks from the pros to help you trim your hedges to that ruler-straight finish.

Keep It Sharp, Keep It Clean

It may sound obvious, but keeping your trimmer blades sharp and clean can mean the difference between a clean cut and a mangled hedgerow. Always make sure your tools are sharp and lubricated before you get to work.

Safety First

Remember to look out for your own safety and that of those around you. Be sure to clear out any obstacles on the ground, and double-check that your tools are well-lubricated and safe. Always wear safety goggles and gloves, and avoid using power tools above shoulder level.

Taper the Tops

Trim your hedges with a slight taper on the top – this improves the stability of the structure and helps excess winter snow slide off without crushing the hedge.

On Small Hedges, Consider Cutting By Hand

Cutting by hand can help you avoid catastrophic mistakes when trimming. While a powered kit may save you some time and effort, it is also easy to cut large chunks from your hedge very quickly, leading to broken and uneven edges.

Make Use of Guides

Cutting straight edges by hand can be difficult. Consider using a taut horizontal string between two poles to guide your shears across the top of your hedge – having a guide can yield straighter lines and significantly more aesthetic hedgerows than estimating your cuts by eye.

Use Proper Hand-Cutting Technique

Cut from the bottom of the hedge upwards, while making use of the section of your shears closest to the pivot point. Avoid cutting with the tip of your shears, which can cause an uneven, pockmarked appearance.
