How Do I Hire an Arborist?

By: albertaarb - April 17, 2017

Now is the time of the year where your yard looks its absolute worst. The snow is gone, revealing all the damage done over the winter. You may have little dog presents all over the yard, which needs to be tended to (yay). Your grass hasn’t quite seen the light of day for long enough to be anything but a gray and mushy mess.

You may also have a few downed branches and/or trees in your yard, which can be a bit of an eyesore. How do you get rid of them?

Find an Arborist in Your Area

Your first step is clearly to look online for someone in your area. So step one starts with Google or Bing. Once you find someone that looks good, be sure that they offer the services you’re looking for. Those services may include:

  • Tree Removal
  • Hazard Assessment or Disease & Insect Diagnosis
  • Stump Grinding
  • Brush Chipping
  • 24hr Emergency Services
  • Tree & Shrub Planting
  • Deep Root Fertilization

Once you confirm they can do what you want them to do, feel free to reach out to them for a quote.

How to Decide on an Arborist

First of all, we know cost will be a factor. But don’t let it be the only factor. Price is nice, but be sure to check their credentials and make sure they’re certified. A few of the notifications you may want to look for include:

  • The International Society of Arboriculture (I.S.A.)
  • The Better Business Burea of Northern and Central Alberta (B.B.B.)
  • Landscape Alberta Nursery Trades Association (L.A.N.T.A.)
  • I.S.A. Certification Program
  • Olds College Environmental Horticulture Diploma: Arboriculture
  • Arboriculture Canada Training and Education Ltd.
  • Arbormaster Training Inc.

Just because you see a guy with a flyer up at the grocery store or on Kijiji, who says he has his own chainsaw and truck, doesn’t mean you should hire him. A good price should never come at the price of being insured or bonded. Your peace-of-mind and property are way too valuable for that.

How is Their Reputation?

This is another big one. What do their previous clients have to say about their work? Were they late, or sloppy? Or were they consummate professionals who came in on-time and on-budget? If they have left their customers unhappy, a simple Google search should reveal that. Unhappy customers are far more likely to leave an online review, versus happy customers.

Also, take a look at their website for client testimonials. There should be lots of them, and there should be fairly recent ones.
