How To Control Invasive Roots

When we think of trees, we tend to focus on the benefits they provide us, such as shade, shelter, and food. However, sometimes trees can pose problems. One of those problems is when their roots grow out of control and become invasive roots. Read on to learn more about how this situation develops and what you can do to control it.

What Causes Invasive Roots?

A tree’s roots serve two functions: they anchor the tree into the soil, making it more stable; and they absorb water and nutrients from the earth in order to survive and grow.

All trees have roots but some roots grow deeper than others. Moreover, the roots of some trees spread more widely than others.

A tree’s roots become invasive when they grow far enough and become strong enough to cause property damage. You might see buckled sidewalks because a tree’s roots have grown underneath them and have caused the sidewalk to shift upwards.

Preventing Invasive Roots

Invasive roots don’t have to be a fact of life. You can prevent them from growing out of control with some planning.

Firstly, choose your trees carefully. Some trees are known for invasive root systems, such as poplars, willows, elms, and silver maples. Consider planting trees that have a reputation for minimally invasive root systems.

Secondly, select your planting location with care. Even trees with minimally invasive root systems still need room to grow. Make sure whatever trees you plant have enough room to flourish, and that they’re not planted near your home, garden, or sidewalk.

What Can I Do about Pre-Existing Trees with Invasive Roots?

Let’s say you’ve moved into a home with a tree that has invasive roots. You didn’t choose to plant that tree in that location, so this situation wasn’t something you could prevent.

Unfortunately, the only remedy is to remove the tree and stump. Getting rid of the stump is crucial because the roots may continue growing and create an even greater hazard.

Tree and stump removal isn’t something you should try on your own. You need a trained tree care specialist with the right equipment and knowledge to remove the tree and stump safely.
