What to Do After a Storm Damages Your Trees

Storms are a common occurrence, often causing damage to trees and endangering private and public property. As a property owner, you need to take steps to ensure both your safety and the safety of your trees after a storm.

Visually assess the damage

After a storm, your first impulse will probably be something like “let’s get this mess cleaned up.” But hasty decisions can often result in removing trees that could have been saved, or trying to save trees that are too badly damaged to be safe.

Limbs and tree trunks can often be safety hazards following a sufficiently nasty storm, so you need to ascertain the safety levels before approaching your trees, so the first thing you need to check for is fallen power lines and loose limbs. If you notice any, call for professional help, and keep people and animals away until they arrive.

Evaluate any property damage. If a large branch falls onto or into your home, it could cause extensive damage . If your home or other property has been damaged, take care of that before you worry about trees and landscaping. Check with your insurance agent that your coverage includes storm damage.

Check the roots of any trees. A storm can erode the soil surrounding a tree's root system. Before approaching the tree, check that its roots are still firmly rooted. If you see a lot of loose soil or newly exposed roots, call in an arborist to assess the tree's structural integrity.

Determine What Stays and What Goes

Once you know your trees are safe to approach, begin examining them. As long as most large limbs are intact and the bark has not been badly wounded, the tree should be able to look after itself. On the other hand, there are signs that a tree is too badly damaged to recover. If the trunk is the only survivor, most or all of the limbs have been removed or if rot is evident in the tree,  unfortunately the tree is probably beyond your expertise. If you have any doubts, you should ask an arborist to evaluate the tree for you.
