Keep Your Hedges Beautiful

The green space on your property, including trees, hedges and shrubs, create a living space that’s easy on the eyes. Studies have also shown that homes with plenty of green space nearby provide a mental boost to those who occupy the home. Make sure you trim your hedges at the best time to ensure that your green space stays pristine and beautiful.

Evergreen Vs. Deciduous Hedges

Before you trim the hedges on your property, make sure you know the type of plant that you’re dealing with. Deciduous hedges, which tend to shed during the cold season, require different pruning patterns than evergreen hedges, which maintain their foliage all year long.

Trimming also depends on the type of pruning that you want to perform. Formative pruning, which creates the specific shape that you want to hedge to form, is different from maintenance pruning, which gets rid of excess growth and struggling branches.

When it comes to maintenance, both types should be pruned every summer, preferably as the season approaches autumn. However, formative pruning for evergreen hedges should be done in spring after planting, as well as in the two springs that follow. Formative pruning for deciduous hedges should follow the same pattern, but take place during winter instead.

Hedging Complications

For the most part, the pruning that you perform may follow general guidelines according to the type of hedge. However, some hedges respond well to more frequent trimming, such as the box evergreen, which responds well to trimming three times during the growing season. Also, some hedges with flowers should be trimmed immediately after flowering.

You should never prune or trim your hedges during nesting season, which can cause damage to nests or scare birds away. In fact, some jurisdictions consider trimming during nesting as an offence against the law, such as the U.K. Wildlife & Countryside Act of 1981, which states that anyone who “takes, damages or destroys the nest of any wild bird while that nest is in use or being built” is subject to legal punishment.
