Which Trees are Most Susceptible to Insect Damage?

Trees are like human beings - they can become ill without proper care. Some trees are more susceptible to damage and disease than others, though. Insects can pose a threat to a tree's health, and some trees fall prey to insect damage more easily than others. Read on to learn which trees are more severely affected by insect damage.

Insect Damage to Trees and Geography

A wide variety of trees can be vulnerable to insect damage due to a combination of geography and insect infestation patterns.

Let’s take the gypsy moth, for example. The gypsy moth came to North America from Europe in the late 1800s. Since arriving on this continent, it has spread from New England to the west and up into Canada.

Gypsy moth caterpillars feed on leaves. They’re not very picky - they like to eat the leaves of forest, shade, ornamental, and fruit trees. If there are enough caterpillars eating leaves, they can defoliate a large area. Defoliation damages trees significantly.

Transplanting Trees and Insect Infestation

Transplanting trees can make them more susceptible to insect infestation and damage. The trees most likely to be transplanted are woody ornamentals.

Woody ornamental trees refer to a type of tree that produces blossoms and looks attractive. Unfortunately, they are also a favourite food of wood boring insects. As their name implies, wood boring insects drill holes into trees and shrubs and eat their insides.

Tree experts believe that woody ornamentals are especially vulnerable to wood boring insects because they sustain damage after being transplanted, traumatizing them. As a result of this state of stress, they emit chemicals that attract the wrong kind of insects, causing even more damage.
