Why We Need Urban Forestry

By: Alberta Arborists - September 12, 2016

They’re beautiful, stately, and vital to the planet. That’s right, we’re talking about trees. Trees are especially important in urban areas. Politicians and bureaucrats recognize this fact, which is why urban forestry has become a crucial concept in city planning.

What Is Urban Forestry?

The term “urban forestry” refers to the management of trees so that they can contribute to the physiological, sociological and economic well-being of an urban society.

Urban forestry isn’t just about managing large groups of trees; it involves managing individual trees as well. Some trees were planted by the municipality, while others grew on their own. Regardless of their origin, the goal of urban forestry is to manage them all.

Trees and the Air We Breathe

Trees play a critical role in reducing pollution. This is especially important in urban centres where there are lots of cars and buildings releasing carbon dioxide emissions.

You might remember learning about photosynthesis in science class. It’s the process by which trees convert carbon dioxide and water into oxygen. The more trees you have, the more oxygen there is. A ten meter ash tree produces nearly 118 kilograms of oxygen per year. The average human consumes approximately 175 kilograms of oxygen per year. Two medium-sized healthy trees can provide enough air for one person for an entire year.

Trees and Temperature

Trees serve an important role in an urban environment - they keep us cool on the hottest days of the summer.

Shade prevents the ground or structures from absorbing and re-radiating solar energy. In addition, trees release moisture, which cools the air around them (as well as the people around them).

Trees and Health

In addition to providing oxygen and regulating our cities’ temperatures, trees help human beings in another way: they make us feel better.

Research shows that trees reduce people’s stress levels. Moreover, hospital patients who can see trees from their windows have a faster recovery time than those who don’t. And studies show that trees can reduce the severity of attention deficit disorders.
