Why Your Trees are Actually Good for Your Mental Health

By: albertaarb - October 6, 2016

Humans evolved while surrounded by natural habitats, but have moved to cities in record number over the past century. This has caused billions to become detached from their natural surroundings, especially in big cities around North America.

If possible, the next best solution to living in nature would be surrounding your home with greenery, including trees. If you have a tree on your property, and you're on the fence as to whether or not you'll keep it, consider the fact that studies show that trees promote mental well-being.

Undeniable Link To Nature

A massive study commissioned by Harvard University over the span of eight years followed 100,000 nurses living across the United States. Scientists monitored the living environment of their subjects and tracked their health throughout the eight-year time period. Over this time period, those who lived in areas with greater greenery had a 12 percent drop in mortality rate compared to those who lived in concrete jungles.

Delving further into details, the team examined mental health data including diagnoses and medications prescribed. Comparing the mental health profiles of all the nurses, the researchers estimated that the reduced mortality was responsible for nearly 30 percent of the benefits. This shows a link to nature that people instinctually feel, implied to be accurate by this research study.

Evolution Of Biophilia

Peter James, a member of the team that performed the Harvard study, stated that the team did not expect “the magnitude” of the results, proving a direct cognitive benefit and restorative quality of being in nature, that we’ve evolved in nature to enjoy being in nature. At this point, there’s no returning to the pristine lands prior to the industrial revolution, but armed with knowledge of this study, people can add trees and greenery to their surroundings, increasing their quality of life.
